Hans Zender, 01.Juli 1996

Gustav Rivinius

Since winning the Gold Medal at the 1990 Tchaikovsky International Competition in Moscow (the first German to do so), Gustav Rivinius has established himself as one of today's most gifted young cellists. Acclaimed by critics for his intelligence, virtuosity, expressivity and warmth, he performs extensively as soloist, recitalist and chamber musician.

In North America, Mr. Rivinius has appeared with the symphonies of Vancouver, Quebec, Pittsburgh, Houston, Cincinnati, St. Louis, Colorado, Milwaukee, Buffalo, Syracuse, Louisville, Phoenix, Kansas City and the National Symphony in Washington, D.C. In addition to a tour of Japan with the Moscow Philharmonic, his European engagements include the London Philharmonia Orchestra, Berlin Symphony Orchestra, WDR Orchestra (Cologne), Bavarian Radio Orchestra, Leipzig Radio Orchestra, Helsinki Philharmonic, Czech Philharmonic and the Lausanne Chamber Orchestra, to name a few. His numerous festival appearances include Chautauqua, Echternach and Schleswig-Holstein.

An avid chamber musician, Gustav Rivinius founded the Trio da Salò with Ani Kavafian, violin, and Barbara Westphal, viola, in 1997. As a recitalist he has performed throughout Europe and at prestigious venues in Montreal, Toronto, Seattle, Los Angeles, Pittsburgh, St. Louis and New York.

In addition to the Tchaikovsky Competition in Moscow, Gustav Rivinius has won the Rostropovich Prize in Paris, the ARD in Munich and the Mendelssohn Prize in Berlin. His teachers include Heinrich Schiff and Zara Nelsova.
